About BuildingDNA
BuildingDNA is an initiative to create an open, machine-readable structure for building information that makes BIM data easier for software, automation, and AI systems to understand and use.
Today, valuable information within BIMs is often tied to particular authoring platforms, schemas, and modelling practices. BuildingDNA aims to transform that information into a consistent structure that combines semantic information about building elements with their geometry, properties, relationships, and traceable identifiers. The intention is not to create another BIM authoring format, but to provide a practical data layer that applications can reliably query and reason over.
By making building information computationally accessible, BuildingDNA can provide a common foundation for many different applications. These could include automated building code and regulatory checking, design quality assurance, model auditing, information validation, energy and sustainability workflows, digital permitting, facility management, and AI agents that need to answer questions about a building. Instead of every application developing its own method of extracting and interpreting BIM data, BuildingDNA is intended to provide a reusable foundation on which those applications can be built.
One of the first applications being developed on top of BuildingDNA is "BuildingDNA Verifier", an AI assisted building compliance verification system. The distinction is important: BuildingDNA is the underlying building data structure, while BuildingDNA Verifier is an application that uses that structure together with semantic querying, geometry reasoning, and regulatory interpretation.
BuildingDNA is being initiated by Pyramoon Innovations and supported by BIMbc, as part of a broader effort to advance practical digital transformation and AI readiness in the building industry.
